Halloween might be the only night when breaking the rules is the rule.
Go outside after dark. Wander the neighborhood. Knock on strangers’ doors. Wait for someone you don’t know to open the door.
“Trick or treat?”
The deal is simple: Give us a treat, or there might be a trick. Of course, these days, we’re mostly there for the treat: A chocolate bar, a handful of candy or, if you picked the right house, a full-size one. The possibility of a trick adds to the fun, even though most of us expect a treat.
If only enterprise data worked the same way. A recovery that doesn’t recover. Sensitive data where you didn’t expect it. Security tools that add complexity. AI built on data you can’t confidently trust. Nobody wants surprises in these areas. So, this Halloween, let’s knock on five doors to uncover common data tricks and the treats that can help you avoid them.
Door #1: Will your recovery really recover what you need?
The trick: “We have backups. We’re covered.”
It’s comforting to know your data is backed up. But when ransomware, an outage, accidental deletion, or another disruption hits, having a backup might not be enough.
The trick is discovering, at exactly the wrong moment, that the data or applications your business needs aren’t as ready for recovery as everyone assumed.
In Veeam’s Data Trust and Resilience Report 2026, based on responses from more than 900 senior IT, security, and risk leaders, 90% were confident they could recover within their recovery time objectives (RTOs). Yet among ransomware victims whose operations or data were affected, only 28% fully recovered their data.
The treat: Resilience with proven, clean, and precise recovery
A backup gives you a recovery copy. Resilience means knowing you can restore the right data, in the right order, to a clean and trusted state. That requires understanding what matters most, what is safe to recover, and what needs to be restored. Precise recovery goes a step further by reversing an unwanted change without unnecessarily restoring everything around it.
Door #2: Is protected data truly secure data?
The trick: “It’s protected, so it must be secure.”
Protection and security are closely connected, but they aren’t the same. Again, Veeam’s 2026 Data Trust & Resilience Report found that 56% of organizations affected by ransomware had data encrypted or exfiltrated. Protection helps you recover; security helps keep threats out. You need both to keep data resilient and recoverable.
The treat: Secure, trusted data
Resilience and security should work together, so the copy you recover from is clean and can’t become another point of vulnerability. Security controls around identities, endpoints, and infrastructure remain essential. But data is a critical control point. When an attack, mistake or unwanted action happens, the consequence lands in the data, and that is where protection must be strongest.
Door #3: Do you actually know what’s in your data?
The trick: “If we have the data, we understand it.”
Organizations are creating, storing, and protecting enormous amounts of data.
But how much do they really know about it? Can they identify where their most sensitive information resides, which data matters most, what requires additional protection, what carries privacy or compliance obligations, and what should (or should not) power AI?
That visibility gap has real consequences. In a Transcend survey of 228 senior IT and business leaders at large enterprises, 81% had at least one AI initiative delayed, scaled back, or abandoned in the past year, with data permission and governance gaps behind many of those stalls
The treat: Visibility and trust
You can’t fully trust what you can’t understand.
When organizations connect context across live and protected data, identity, access, activity, and AI, they can make better decisions about what to protect, what to prioritize, govern it, and how it should be used. Context creates intelligence, and that’s what makes confident decisions possible.
Door #4: Are more tools giving you more control?
The trick: “If we can see it, we can control it.”
There’s one tool for protecting data, another for monitoring it, and yet another for securing it, plus multiple dashboards with never-ending streams of alerts.
Pretty soon, the answer to complexity has created even more complexity.
Teams have to figure out what matters, determine what’s actually at risk, prioritize what to address first, and coordinate a response, often across different systems and teams.
The cost is real. In the same Data Trust and Resilience Report 2026, nearly three in 10 organizations had a cyber incident in the past year that caused data loss or disruption. Among them, 42% reported customer disruption, 41% reported financial impact, and 38% suffered extended downtime of critical systems.
The treat: Intelligent operations
Intelligence matters when it turns into action. By connecting context across data, identity, access, activity and AI, teams can better understand risk and prioritize what matters. Intelligence and automation can help teams act before, during and after disruption. Instead of asking people to hunt for the signal in the noise, intelligent operations can help bring the signal to them.
That’s where a platform approach pays off: Turning context into intelligence and intelligence into action.
Door #5: Can AI really succeed without reliable data?
The trick: “AI can overcome bad data.”
AI can help organizations work smarter, make better decisions, manage risk, and create new value. But redundant, obsolete, trivial, corrupted, incomplete, or untrusted data can lead to flawed insights and decisions.
In Veeam’s Data and AI Trust Gap research, based on 600 senior executives, 88% of organizations are using or piloting AI agents, but only 7% are truly AI-ready. And 95% say data challenges have already slowed their AI progress. As Veeam CEO Anand Eswaran put it, “Most organizations don’t have an AI adoption problem; they have an AI trust problem.”
Can you trust the data feeding your AI? And if an agent makes an unwanted change, can you recover from it?
The treat: Trusted data for trusted AI
The goal isn’t simply more AI. It’s AI you can use with confidence. Trusted AI starts with trusted data, and trusted data has to be understood, governed, protected, and recoverable. When data is resilient, secure, governed, and understood, organizations can move from protecting it to putting it to work safely.
The ultimate treat: Confidence in your data
Across all five doors, the lesson is the same: Backup alone is not enough. Organizations need data that is protected, secure, understood, and recoverable, and operations that help teams act quickly when something goes wrong.
That is the value of a platform approach. By bringing together data resilience, data security and intelligent operations, Veeam DataAI Command Platform helps organizations trust their data and use it with confidence.
On Halloween, scary surprises are part of the fun. When it comes to your data, they’re anything but.
