Relentless grit and fiery determination aren’t just hallmarks of Seattle Orcas cricket, they’re the foundation of resilience that every organization needs.
At Veeam, resilience drives everything we do. From protecting our customers’ data to partnering with champions of adaptability like the Seattle Orcas, resilience shapes our approach.
Our multi-year commitment goes beyond sponsorship. Instead, it’s about learning from champions who’ve mastered the art of bouncing back stronger.
Resilience: The Common Thread
Recently, I had the privilege of hosting a webinar with Ross Taylor, former New Zealand cricket legend and Seattle Orcas ambassador, and Shayan Jahangir, current Orcas star and USA international. Their experiences mirror the tests organizations face daily — where setbacks are inevitable, but resilience transforms adversity into opportunity. The lessons learned on the pitch provide a powerful blueprint for how businesses can cultivate resilience in their teams and systems.
Shayan’s journey from Karachi to the USA and the Orcas demanded grit and unwavering support from family. For Ross, resilience was on full display when he scored 181 runs on one leg, after tearing his quad during a match. He proved that preparation, mindset, and a strong support network are the foundation of endurance and recovery, both in sport and in life.
“There’s no truer saying than beware of the injured batsman,” Ross said.
Cricket & Data Resilience: Striking Parallels
Cricket and data resilience have much in common. In cricket, teams prepare for unpredictable conditions — weather, injuries, or surprising opposition tactics. Businesses, too, must anticipate digital curveballs: cyberattacks, outages, and human error.
Routine is key. Shayan’s consistent pre-game rituals help him stay calm and ready; for businesses, this translates to regular data backups, recovery drills, and strong IT practices. Preparation builds confidence under pressure, whether you’re facing a fast bowler or a sudden server crash.
Learning from failure is central in both worlds. In cricket, even top players are more often out than they are celebrated for big scores. The true test is how they analyze setbacks, adjust techniques, and support teammates to come back stronger. Similarly, resilient organizations run drills, learn from incidents, and keep refining their strategies. Businesses that encourage teams to review missteps, learn openly, and innovate quickly are more likely to thrive under pressure.
Above all, trust and communication, either on the field or within the business world, ensure fast, unified responses to any challenge. A cricket captain must trust bowlers to stick to the plan and fielders to back each other up; in business, leaders must trust their teams, IT experts, and support staff to act decisively and collaboratively when the unexpected happens. The culture that embraces open feedback, clear roles, and shared purpose will always have an edge — whether defending a tricky total or recovering data after a disruption.
Data Resilience: The Modern Imperative
Just as cricket teams can’t afford to be complacent, organizations must extend this spirit to their most important asset: their data. The nightmare of waking up to offline systems is all too real.
Veeam research shows that while 70% of organizations express confidence in their readiness, 74% fall short of best practices for data resilience. The gap between perceived and actual preparedness is a major risk: unplanned digital downtime costs the world’s top companies hundreds of billions annually.
True resilience isn’t just about cybersecurity. Operational failures including cloud outages, software issues, hardware faults, and human error, are frequent and costly. Businesses need a comprehensive approach: robust backup, recovery, proactive testing, and strong processes. By integrating lessons from elite sports teams like the Orcas, organizations can build digital durability and keep operations running smoothly, no matter the challenge.
The Veeam–Seattle Orcas Partnership: Resilience in Action
Our partnership with the Seattle Orcas is built on this foundation. The Orcas’ high-performance culture mirrors Veeam’s approach to data resilience: always ready for the unexpected.
But the partnership is about more than just branding or visibility. Through joint events, exclusive experiences, and knowledge sharing, Veeam brings the spirit of resilience to our wider community by creating unique opportunities for customers, partners, and cricket fans alike. Whether it’s VIP access to Orcas matches, behind-the-scenes learning sessions, or community outreach, we’re building connections that foster both sporting and digital resilience.
The partnership also provides a platform for innovation and leadership. It demonstrates how organizations that invest in resilience and culture can outperform, outlast, and out-innovate their competition.
A Call to Action
As digital change accelerates, resilience is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you’re leading a cricket team, a business unit, or a data center, ask yourself: Are we prepared for the unexpected? Are we building resilience into our culture, systems, and strategy?
At Veeam, we’re committed to helping organizations achieve resilience on the field or in the office.
